The Australian Spinal Research Foundation's Board of Governors are committed to better outcomes for the chiropractic community through the pursuit of our Vision and delivering on our Mission to fund research and disseminate knowledge that furthers the understanding, development and effectiveness of chiropractic care.

  

  

Dr Martin Harvey
President of Spinal Research BSc, MChiro
 
Dr Martin Harvey graduated from MacquarieUniversity in 1992. He has been in private practice since graduating. He practices in a family focussed practice in South Melbourne emphasizing pro-active care. Martin has served the chiropractic profession on the boards of the Chiropractors Association of Australia (Vic), Chiropractic Education Australia and Spinal Research. He has received four Meritorious Service Awards from the CAA and was honoured as an inaugural Member of the AustralasianCollege of Chiropractors.
 

Martin is the Chair of the Parker Organising Committee, provides the chiropractic and general health content to Spinal Research’s “Illuminate” newsletter and serves on the Clinical Advisory Panel, the Research Agenda Working Committee, and the Dynamic Growth Programming Committee. Martin is inspired by the potential that chiropractic care has to transform the health of our communities in a cost-effective, efficient and safe manner. Martin’s other passions are his family, surfing, wine, food and running.  


Dr Ray Hayek 

Deputy President of Spinal Research - BSc (Hons), MChiro, PhD, FICC, FACC

 

Dr Ray Hayek graduated with a Bachelor of Science with 1st class honours degree in anatomy.  He later went on to attain his Master of Chiropractic degree. In 1993, whilst in private practice, Dr Hayek joined Macquarie University as a full-time lecturer, and subsequently graduated in 1999 with a PhD in neuroscience from the Department of Biological Sciences.

 

Ray has been the head lecturer of Neurology at Macquarie University for the last fourteen years and contributes widely to other subjects including: Professional Studies, Research Methods and Epidemiology, Spinal Biomechanics and Chiropractic Principles. His administrative responsibilities included: Director of Research, Assistant Head of the Department of Health and Chiropractic, and Director of the Centre for Chiropractic at Macquarie University.

 

Ray jointly received Macquarie University’s 2005 Commercialisation Award for Teleradiology, and was highly commended by Macquarie University’s 2007 Invention Disclosure Award for a collaborative project developing a spinal cord injury stimulator.


Ray serves and has served the profession and the University in various additional capacities including: Executive Member Council on Chiropractic Education Australasia (CCE-A), Governor on the board of the Australian Spinal Research Foundation, Macquarie University’s Academic Senate, Inaugural Chair Consortium of Chiropractic Institutions Australasia (CCI-A),  peer reviewer for the "Chiropractic Journal of Australia", advisor to the Health Care Complaints Commission (HCCC), Chair of the Research Committee and Vice President of the Australian Spinal Research Foundation & Foundation Head for the Centre for Spinal and Medical Research, Access Macquarie, Macquarie University. He is a fellow of the International College of Chiropractors (FICC) and a foundation fellow of the Australasian College of Chiropractors (FACC) providing ongoing medicolegal advice to the profession.


Mark Uren

Treasurer of Spinal Research - MChiro, DC

 

Dr Mark Uren graduated from the Sydney College of Chiropractic in 1983 and completed a post-professional Master of Chiropractic Science Degree at Macquarie University in 1991. Mark has practiced in Lane Cove, Sydney, since 1984. The practice focus is on improving health and wellbeing for all ages. Mark has served on a range of chiropractic organizations including the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia and The College Council of the Sydney College of Chiropractic.

 

Mark serves as Honorary Secretary and is a member of the Clinical Advisory Panel, Research Agenda Working Committee, and CEO Review Panel. In addition, he is the Logistics Coordinator for the Dynamic Growth Congress, encouraging and empowers more than 130 volunteers to contribute to this amazing event, raising funds for Spinal Research. He is passionate about Chiropractic’s fantastic ability to maximise human potential and the human experience. Mark’s aim is to see that we, as a profession, scientifically document the biological, physical and psych-social mechanisms of the chiropractic adjustment.

Dr Tony Rose

 Secretary of Spinal Research BAppSc (Chiro), BClinicalSc

 

Dr Tony Rose is a 1998 RMIT graduate. Having practiced as an associate, locum and principle throughout Australia, he now calls Adelaide home. Tony is the Dynamic Growth Congress 2009 Convenor, undertaking the role of mustering and coordinating multiple organising teams, speakers and program content – all ensuring maximum delegate learning, inspiration and satisfaction. He sees research as a major vehicle in Chiropractic becoming the leader in health care.

Dr Rosemary Keating

B App Sc (Chiropractic) M Chiro Sc (Paediatric)

Dr Rosemary Keating graduated from Phillip Institute of Technology in 1989, and completed her Masters in Paediatrics from RMIT in 2004.

She has served on the boards of CAA (Qld) as Treasurer, and Sacro-Occipital Technique Australasia, including a term as President.
Rosemary is passionately involved in people developing their best, and facilitates that through family wellness practice on the Sunshine Coast Queensland, Coaching with Quest Transformative Coaching, and co-facilitating “Kids...Connecting, Learning, Growing” seminars.
She is thrilled to have joined the board of Governors in October 2008, and is keen to continue to support research, particularly as it relates to children.

 Dr. Brett Grant  BSc, MChiro

Dr. Brett Grant graduated with a Masters degree in Chiropractic from Macquarie University in 1996.   At the end of that same year, Brett set up his practice in Chatswood, on the north shore of Sydney.

Brett’s practice focuses on the health and wellbeing for families, looking not only to make life-enhancing changes for the current generation, but also to enhance the quality of life and human potential for generations to follow.  For this, Chiropractic is the natural vehicle, and the Research Foundation, through its research and initiatives will provide the “backbone” of scientifically validated material.   As well as his passion for Chiropractic, Brett also loves to spend time with his young family, going to the beach, surfing, enjoying the outdoors, or snow skiing.

What we do day to day in practice, in the Research Foundation, or for that matter in life is very much summed up in a quote by BJ Palmer; “We never know how far reaching what we think, say or do today, will affect the lives of millions tomorrow.”


Professor Elizabeth Deane

 BSc (Hon), PhD

 

Professor Elizabeth Deane has a Bachelor of Science with 1st Class Honours (1975) and PhD (1981) from the University of Sydney. Elizabeth is currently PVC (Education) at the Australian National University. Prior to this, and for over 20 years, she has held a number of academic leadership positions including Foundation Head of Department of Biological Sciences; Head of School of Sciences and Interim Dean of College of Science and Technology at the University of Western Sydney (1989 – 2000) and Dean of Division of Environmental and Life Sciences at Macquarie University, Sydney (2000 – 2008). 

 

Elizabeth has been and is a member of a number of Boards, including:

 

  • Access Macquarie - the commercialisation arm of Macquarie University
  • the DEST CRC Committee and a member of its Communications Sub-Committee
  • Biomed North - a consortium aimed at increasing the interface between university, medical research and industry to deliver commercial outcomes
  • Australian Council of Deans of Science Executive  
Elizabeth has been an active funded researcher in the area of marsupial biology and management and was a member of the executive for the CRC for Conservation and Management of Marsupials (1998-2003). She has also undertaken research and published in the area of University Management and women and research in Universities.

DrJames Carter DC

Born in Dubbo NSW, Dr. James Carter graduated from Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in 1968 and practiced in Mosman until 1980 when he returned to North America to start The Carter Program, a Professional development program for chiropractors which was recognised and funded by the Ontario Government's Department of Skills Development in 1986. He has post graduate studies in psychology and is a certified coach.

Dr James Carter’s is an advisor to chiropractic organizations and practitioners worldwide. Over the past 30 years, his strong message promoting integrity and his compassion for chiropractic have made him a much sought-after international speaker coach and mentor.

His professional appointments Include Editor, Journal of the Australian Chiropractors' Association, Directorships of Chiropractic Education Australia, Chiropractors Association of Australia (National), Chiropractors Association of Australia (NSW),  Professional Coach, Chiropractors Association of Australia W. Gary Smith

BSc (Anatomy), MAppSc (Chiro), DipTeach HCE, GradDipRecStudies

 

Gary Smith was first introduced to Chiropractic when his eldest daughter was helped significantly with her asthma and turned-in feet. He was so impressed with the results, and the Chiropractic Philosophy, that he threw in his occupation as a Health and Physical Education teacher and went back to university in his 30s and with two young children. After six years of study he graduated from Macquarie University with a Masters in Chiropractic, and has now been practising for 11 years.

 

Gary has served on the NSW CAA Board and as a consultant Chiropractor with the local Academy of Sport. His practice has a strong family focus and a vision of helping the whole community become healthier without the use of drugs or surgery, and with Chiropractic as a centre-piece of that vision. Gary is also the National Convenor of Dynamic Growth Experiences.

 

Gary believes the Research and associated activities of Spinal Research are central and vital to the continued growth, recognition, and validation of chiropractic. As Gary states, “anyone who is fair-dinkum about chiropractic must be involved with the Australian Spinal Research Foundation at some level.”


Dr David Cahill  BAppSc (Chiro) 
Dr David Cahill graduated in 1992 from Philip Institute of Technology. David enjoyed learning about practice, firstly, as an Associate and then as a locum throughout Australia. In 1995 he travelled to Northern Ireland staying for over two years before coming home and starting his own practice in Melbourne in 1998.
 
In 1999 David was encouraged to take up a position on the Board of Governors of the Australian Spinal Research Foundation. David is a passionate supporter of the vision encompassed by the Dynamic Growth movement and was able to express that passion as Convener of the DG Congress from 2002 – 2007. In 2006, David became President of Spinal Research.  He enjoys the challenges of serving the profession he loves in that capacity.  David is also an active member of the Foundation’s Research Agenda Working Committee and Clinical Advisory Panel. 
David is inspired by the many chiropractors over the last 100 years who have demonstrated extraordinary leadership. Those, who through their writings and speeches, or even simply through their example, have courageously lit a path for our profession to follow - and to use as a springboard for the future. He is passionate about chiropractors realizing their potential, and chiropractic taking the leadership role that the world is demanding.
